Almost all of STI's models are made in America. Georgetown, TX to be precise. There are only 3 models that are not built in Georgetown, TX: the GP6 (a polymer pistol), the Spartan (an entry level 1911), and the Texican (a single action revolver). Most STI parts are made in house, including the frame. In fact, STI makes frames for other manufactures, much like Caspian Arms makes frames for other manufactures. STI's EDM cut ignition parts also find their way into other manufacture's pistols. The only parts STI does not make themselves are the pins and springs.

Now most of STI isn't a full on custom job, but at one time they did have a custom shop. STI makes mass produced production pistols, just like the other big boys, but they tend to get a bit more hand fitting than some of the other major brands. With their high quality ignition parts and more hand fitting, you often get a smoother feel and a very nice crisp trigger for a production gun. I'm not an expert at 1911's, so this is just my humble opinion. Overall most people I know are happy with their STI's and the few I have seen have been very nice.
